The plant kingdom has always been the favorite source of medication in all-healing traditions all over the world. Ayurveda also makes use of various herbs in its

different formulations suggested in its classical texts.

As you all know that the Panchavidha kashaya kalpana (5 basic methods of preparation of medicines) i.e. swarasa (juice), kalka (paste), heema (cold infusion), phanta (hot infusion), kashaya /kwatha (decoction) are the basic 5 ideas on which the branch of Bhaishajya kalpana (branch which deals with preparation of herbal medicines) absolutely depends upon. All the future developments in this branch are further proliferations of the Panchavidha kashaya kalpana.

These basic five ideas have certain disadvantages, short shelf life being the foremost. To overcome these disadvantages certain developments were trued & according to us the most effective idea to tackle these disadvantages can be sought in the concept of Rasakriya.

As defined in Sharangdhara samhita.

“Kwathadinam punaha pakat Ghanatwam sa Rasakriya”.

Kwatha and others (Swarasa, kalka etc. Panchavidha kashaya kalpana) when further processed with heat becomes thicker in consistency (viscous/semisolid/solid), is termed as “Rasakriya”. This Rasakriya has been attributed properties of being sticky, viscous like an Avaleha. This Rasakriya also has some disadvantages like difficulty in processing, drying, storage & administration (more so in tropical countries like India & Sri Lanka). So the next development in this concept was to process this viscous material with the help of heat till it solidifies, which ultimately can be made in to powder form, which we call “Ghana” (It is totally different from total extract).
